Gov. Mark Dayton is seizing on President Donald Trump's emergency declaration on opioids, calling on lawmakers to fund prevention and treatment programs.

Trump declared opioid addiction a nationwide public health emergency on Thursday. Data shows opioid overdose deaths are up 430 percent in the last two decades in Minnesota.

Dayton says lawmakers should renew an effort to charge pharmaceuticals 1 cent per painkiller pill sold in Minnesota to fund prevention and treatment options.
