R-P schools-Race to the Top

The Rushford-Peterson School District has decided to apply for a state grant in the Obama administration's "Race to the Top" program.

The program will provide 4.3 billion dollars in federal stimulus funds to between 10 and 15 states in an effort to help local school districts close the achievement gap.

The Tri-County Record reports the Rushford-Peterson district could get up to 160-thousand dollars in grant funds over a 4-year period if the State of Minnesota qualifies for the stimulus funds.

Minnesota Education Commissioner Alice Seagren told Winona Radio News earlier that Race for the Top is a great opportunity for local school districts to improve their quality of education.

Seagren says the state could qualify for a much as 175-million dollars from the stimulus funds and plans to turn 85-to-90 percent of the funds over to the local school districts who apply.
