Trail funding

The Houston County Trails Committee, a subcommittee of the Houston County Economic Development Authority, is moving forward on a plan to fund area trail construction.

According to the Houston County News, the main goal of the group has been to extend the Root River Trail from the trailhead in Houston to La Crescent, a distance of about 20 miles.

By tying in with Wisconsin bike trail system outside La Crosse, a huge network would be created. The existing Root River Trail extends about 43 miles, so with the extension, more than 60 miles of Minnesota trails would be linked to about 100 miles of western Wisconsin bike trails.

The portion of trail that is closest to being built is probably the Wagon Wheel section. The trail will follow the old stage coach dike within the La Crescent city limits.

Funding in the form of a $436,000, Area Transportation Partnership federal grant is in place, along with state legislative bonding funds of $250,000 to cover local matching fund requirements.
