Carlene Buschkopf Dies

Winona Police are reporting that a former Winona woman convicted in 1983 of murdering her husband has died.

Deputy Police Chief Tom Williams said his department has received word that Carlene Buschkopf has died.

Buschkopf, who was 33-years-old at the time, was sentenced to life in prison in the death of her husband Theodore Buschkopf following one of Winona's most sensational murder cases.  Buschkopf's associate, Arthur Lucas, was also convicted of murder and also was sentenced to life in prison.

The two were convicted of conspiring to murder Theodore Buschkopf who was found shot to death in a room at the Westgate Motel in August of 1983.  Carlene was also shot but claimed the couple were attacked by intruders.

Turned out Carlene shot herself, after she and Lucas had plotted to murder Theodore in an attempt to collect his life insurance proceeds in order to pay off some bad debts.  Carlene Bushkopf managed to escape from the women's prison at Shakopee a few years after her imprisonment while working outside but was found a few days later near the Twin Cities and sent back and given additional prison time.
