The Winona State men’s basketball team begins play in the NCAA Division II Central Region tournament on Saturday in Mankato. The Warriors are the seventh seed in the tournament at 20-9 and they face the second seed Mesa State who is ranked 23rd in the latest Division II rankings. The Warriors will have to make their playoff run without leading scorer David Johnson, who is out for the season with a foot injury.
The Mavericks are 22-5 and they are making their fifth appearance in the region tournament. Mesa State’s last region tournament appearance was in 2004 and the Mavericks have never won a region tournament game in school history.
Winona State’s playoff game tips off at 2:30 from Mankato. Other matchups in the region tournament include top seed Minnesota State-Mankato taking on Colorado School of Mines while Augustana plays New Mexico Highlands and St. Cloud State takes on Metro State.
David Johnson has been named to Daktronics All-Central Region Second team. Johnson leads the Warriors in scoring averaging 19 points per game but will miss the rest of the season with an injury. Johnson was a first team all-region pick last season.
